RUS 104 Project 5a 5b

SENSE OF PLACE : NEIGHBOURHOOD AND COMMUNITY

Came to Project 5, we started to do something BIG.
The task was given on 11October 2013. We were required to do site analysis and also self site visit. There were 6 site (residential areas), we chose a residential area in Sg.Ara. The site we chose was Setia Green which is under the developer of SP Setia.

We went to the site for 2 times to gather more information such as movement network, lot layout, name of buildings, sun orientation, vegetation and so on.

From this project, I had learned a lot. Thanks to my studiomaster Dr. Suraiyati Rahman who led us all the way from the beginning of the project and she gave us a lot of information when we were "blurring our way" while completing this project.

In project 5b which was about Proposed improvements
It was quite a hard time for me to search for more information for improving and propose better improvements for the residential area. Besides the common proposal such as adding more street furniture and street lamps, i also looked for more information from the forums to gather more info shared by those residents and buyers of Setia Green.

RUS 104 PROJECT 4

PRESENTATION DRAWINGS

After project 3b, we were required to do presentation drawings on 2 pieces of A3 size cartridge paper on board. From this project, i had learn that i have to do an actual and perfect calculation with the right scale before i draw something on the paper. Besides, i had already learned how to arrange my presentation drawings so that it doesn't look TOO "BORING" to "sell" it to my "clients". Besides drawing elevations, we were also required to draw axonometric drawing and perspective drawing too.

OBJECT CONNECTION : A COMFORTABLE CHAIR

Project 3b was also something about 'object connection'. This time, we were given something different rather than working on the cartridge paper. Well, we still didn't know our 'chair' has to be draw as a blueprint later on. Everyone were trying so hard to create something special yet fully functional.

So these were the task requirements :

  • Produce a structural model of a wooden L-shape seating object that combines a table and chair(s) (students are free to design and decide the form of each chair/sofa/table/desk)
  •  Besides aesthetical factors, the function of the furniture as an outdoor comfortable resting spot for HBP community and visitors were also required to be considered (as it will be placed near the HBP pond-waterfall).
  • The size of that L-shape seating object should not be more than 2.8m x 2.0m x 1.2m (length x width x height) dimension
  • The theme of that seating object is ‘UNITY’
  • The scale of the model is 1:5
My groupmates and I decided to create something simple and nice without losing the antithetical factors of a L-shaped wooden chair.

FREE FORM SCULPTURE

By 23 September 2013, we were given another new project with the tittle "Object Creation - Free Form Sculpture“
Everyone has their own definition for the word "free form". For me, free free is something that "not in shape" but everything with "flow". I was thinking about something not in shape but i ended up by creating a tree where it branches are different from the actual trees. The inspirations were came from a tree i saw around School of Housing Building and Planning, USM. Then i came up with an idea for creating a free form sculpture in special way.

Material used is iron wire in different size. I used the technique of twist and roll to create the tree trunk and branches. think iron wires were quite hard to twist by using bare hands, so i used pliers to twist it.

The above photo were taken before i twist the branches into swirl-shape.

Since the theme of the sculpture has to be something relating to ''HARMONY'', i planned to add some butterflies to work as tree leaves. Those paper-made butterflies were painted in pastel colours to show the soft tone of colours choice and butterflies brings an aesthetic feel when it combined with a tree with swirl-shape branches.
This is the end product of my free form sculpture.

NATURAL STRUCTURE

For project 2, we were required to do 2 drawings- natural structure and man-made structure.
I had quite a hard time searching for a natural-structure. At the end, i found a kind of potted plant in front of Hamzah Sendut Library 1. My choice for natural structure was calathea medalion because the plant itself has obvious lines and structures.

From this project, i've learned to do pencil drawing, it was my first encounter to do pencil drawing and pencil sketch. It was a hard time for me to transform something from a picture onto a piece of cartridge paper in the right scale. Before this, where was a work shop given for us to learn and to practice pencil sketching.

this is the pencil sketch i had done during the work shop

RUS 104 Project 2B

Man-Made Structure

It was a project issued by 13 September and we were given 10days to complete it where the due date is 23 September.
The objective of this project is to enhance our understanding of  basic elements and principles of design through observation of existing natural and man-made structures. It is also to enhance our creativity in presenting ideas selectively and graphically.

From this project, I've learned to observe buildings especially man-made structure and natural structure in detail. Besides that, i have learned that some of the man-made structure design elements and ideas were gathered from the nature.

In project 2B, we were required to produce a coloured drawing of man-made structure that can be found around USM Main Campus. I had chose the bus-stop at Dataran Bintang, next to Dewan Budaya. It is a bus-stop with a semi-circle curve on the stop with 4 round pillars, i used to walk pass the bus-stop everyday when i am on my way back to my hostel.

We were also required to present our own drawings by colouring it and also writing down some descriptions in upper case architectural lettering. From this project, I had learned to do water colouring since my last drawing class was when i was still in standard 5. I did my project with my friends, we shared our colouring skills together and it did help a lot for me to improve my water colouring skill and also learned to arrange my drawings to present my project better.
